Child Sponsorship is the basic foundation of the organization. Plan was founded in 1937 to assist displaced children during the Spanish civil war. Plan was initially known as Foster Parents Plan for War Children. It was during the 1950s that Plan moved into developing countries including Ethiopia.

Plan works at grass roots level with and for children, families and communities to bring about long term sustainable development.

Plan’s global identity includes a central organizing thought “Children are at the heart of everything we do” with four organizational attributes which are; Building relationships; Being a recognized voice; Achieving results; And realizing potentials.

BECAUSE I AM A GIRL CAMPAIGN

Plan International launches its global campaign called “Because I am a Girl” (BIAAG) on 11th October 2012, on the occasion of the first ever International Day of the Girl Child. Because I am a Girl is Plan’s campaign that aims to lift up millions of girls out of poverty.

Across the world, girls face double discrimination due to their gender and age, leaving them at the bottom of the social ladder. Girls are more likely to suffer from malnutrition; Be forced into an early marriage; Be subject to violence or intimidation; Be trafficked, sold or coerced into the sex trade; Or become infected with HIV.

The Main Goal of Plan’s Because I Am A Girl campaign commits to building the human capital of girls through knowledge and skills, aiming to equip, enable and empower girls of all ages to acquire the assets, skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in life. Key to these are safe and quality learning environments for girls, both formal and non-formal.

The Campaign themes and outcomes include; girls enrol and complete quality primary and secondary education in a safe and supportive community environment and acquire the skills they need to access decent economic opportunities; Girls have time and space to become active citizens and develop safe social networks and life skills; Girls are empowered to enjoy & realize their rights & potentials; Girls have increased financial skills and economic assets, and their social position and value is recognized in society.

Plan aims to reach millions of children through program intervention and awareness rising in the next three years, amongst other. Plan International Ethiopia focuses on two barriers (1) lack of early learning foundation; And (2) early marriage (harmful traditional practices) during its three years BIAAG campaign implementation periods.
